Birmingham Man Killed Wife Over Divorce Papers

Shoukat Ali

A Birmingham man cut his wife’s throat because he couldn’t cope with her divorcing him.

Shoukat Ali, broke into the family home in Alum Rock in November 2012 and attacked his estranged wife, Shaista Khatoon. The 38 year old cut her throat and she died later from her injuries at Heartlands Hospital.

Claire Nicholls, Senior Crown Prosecutor from West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service’s Public Protection Unit, said:

“This is an extremely tragic case where a mother of five was brutally killed by her estranged husband because he was unable to accept that she wanted a divorce from him.

“The victim, Shaista Khatoon, had separated from Shoukat Ali and she was living in the family home with her children. Since their separation, Ali had launched a campaign of harassment and threats against her and their children.

“Two days before the fatal attack, the defendant had received a divorce letter from his wife through the Islamic Court. Angry and upset with this, he broke into the family home and confronted the victim. Fearing for her safety, Mrs Khatoon tried to call her sister and the police, but Ali terminated the calls. Concerned family members then called the police who arrived at the family home in Alum Rock, Birmingham to find the victim lying in a pool of blood in the living room.

“Attempts were made by the emergency services to resuscitate her, but she would later succumb to her injuries.

“Two hours later, police received a call from the ambulance service reporting that a man was trying to harm himself. This man was identified as Ali and he was arrested and later charged with the murder of his wife.

“Through Ali’s heartless actions, five children have lost their loving and devoted mother. Our thoughts are today with them and Mrs Khatoon’s family and friends.”
