Teen Charged over Smethwick Murder

A 17 year old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of Ben Morutare in Smethwick.

16 year old Ben was stabbed in the leg outside a social club on Oldbury Road in the early hours of Saturday 28th July.

The Home Guard and Old Comrades club was hosting a birthday party at the time.

The teen, who lived in Walsall but was originally from Zimbabwe, died later in hospital.

The 17 year old lad charged with the murder is from Birmingham, appeared in front of magistrates on Wednesday 22nd August.

He was then remanded in custody while investigatings are ongoing.

Seven people were originally arrested over the death, and Detective Chief Inspector Bob Hazel says police are still appealing for witnesses to the attack:

“We would like to hear from anyone whose vehicle was parked in the car park or on the road near to the club on the night of the incident.”
